Jewish Americans: Identity, History, and Experience
This course examines how Jewish Americans have acculturated and assimilated as well as how Jews have been racially categorized in the United States. By exploring these topics, you will be well-prepared to help students draw connections with other ethnic groups while deepening their own identities.

Course Outcomes:
By the end of this course, you will be able to do the following:
- Describe the general history of Jews in America
- Explain how Jewish Americans are an ethnic group that is connected through a shared history, ancestry, culture, religion, sacred texts, and more
- Recognize that Jewish Americans are remarkably diverse in appearance, skin color, ethnic subgroup, and religious practice
- Explain that intersectionality is the unique combination of identities that shapes individuals’ or groups’ experiences, and can refer to individual or group identities
- Explain that conceptions of race and labels change over time and place (racial formation) and are socially constructed
