SUMMARY:Exploring Jewish Identity Series with The Zekelman Holocaust Center (Part 3)
DESCRIPTION:Part 3 of ICS‘ Exploring Jewish Identity series with The Zekelman Holocaust Center\, “Beyond Belief: Investigating the Multifaceted Identities of Jewish Americans” examines the rich history\, diversity\, and lived experiences of the Jewish American community to provide educators with a practical toolkit for teaching the complexity of personal identity. The session includes a focused exploration of the struggle and resilience of the 4\,000 Holocaust survivors who settled in Michigan after the war\, as well as a conversation with a next-generation survivor reflecting on growing up in a Holocaust survivor family and the meaning of legacy today. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with the speaker through guided discussion and questions. \nEach educator will be provided with dinner\, 2 SCECH points\, and instructional resources for their classroom. \nRegister Here \nThis is an in-person workshop at The Zekelman Holocaust Center. SUMMARY:Bridging Past and Present: Teaching Jewish Immigration and the Holocaust through Primary Sources and Family Histories - a Joint PD event with ICS and 3GNY
DESCRIPTION:Explore early twentieth century Jewish immigration to the U.S. in relation to this country’s larger immigrant story. Using primary sources\, participants will discuss push and pull factors for Jewish immigration between 1880-1924\, describe Jewish American life in New York\, and grapple with the repercussions of the 1924 Immigration Act. Among those repercussions was an immigration system in the US that left many of Europe’s Jews effectively trapped\, with no safe place to go\, as Hitler and the Nazis rose to power. \nFrom there\, participants will learn about 3GNY‘s WEDU program\, which connects the grandchildren of Holocaust survivors with students and school groups. 3GNY speakers share their family’s Holocaust experiences to provide a human face to the past and a living link to the present\, inspiring students to think critically and act with courage and compassion. \nWith these resources in mind\, teachers will be empowered to connect the past and the present for their students and gain new insights\, connections\, and ready-to-use resources for teaching this crucial history. \nThis is an open workshop\, in partnership with 3GNY and ICS\, and is designed for current/future K-12 educators who teach/plan on teaching this content. SUMMARY:Institute for Curriculum Services LVW - History of European Antisemitism
DESCRIPTION:Where does antisemitism come from? This is a question that students frequently ask when learning about the Holocaust. Antisemitism (anti-Judaism before the modern era) is over 2\,000 years old\, but courses that cover the Holocaust often do not consider pre-20th century history. This session outlines the larger context of antisemitism throughout Europe and offers the content teachers need to help students understand the origins and history of the “longest hatred”. The session will examine the four intersecting historical forms of antisemitism – religious\, economic\, socio-political\, and racial. \nThis is an open workshop\, led by one of our ICS educators\, and is designed for current/future K-12 educators who teach/plan on teaching this content.
