SUMMARY:Institute for Curriculum Services LVW - Jewish Voices in Early America
DESCRIPTION:In the year of the nation’s 250th anniversary\, and in honor of National Civic Learning Week (March 8-12th)\, join ICS to explore a paradox of the early Republic: the gap between the vision of liberty and the reality of religious exclusion. While the founders championed representative democracy\, many 1776 state constitutions implemented practices that effectively barred Jewish citizens and other religious minorities from holding public office. \nThis session equips educators with primary source-driven strategies to teach the crucial distinction between religious toleration and true religious liberty. Highlighting primary sources such as Jonas Phillips’ 1787 letter to George Washington\, the session will trace the civic activism of early Jewish Americans that expanded religious liberty. \nThis is an open workshop\, led by one of our ICS educators\, and is designed for current/future K-12 educators who teach/plan on teaching this content. SUMMARY:Institute for Curriculum Services LVW - History of European Antisemitism
DESCRIPTION:Where does antisemitism come from? This is a question that students frequently ask when learning about the Holocaust. Antisemitism (anti-Judaism before the modern era) is over 2\,000 years old\, but courses that cover the Holocaust often do not consider pre-20th century history. This session outlines the larger context of antisemitism throughout Europe and offers the content teachers need to help students understand the origins and history of the “longest hatred”. The session will examine the four intersecting historical forms of antisemitism – religious\, economic\, socio-political\, and racial. \nThis is an open workshop\, led by one of our ICS educators\, and is designed for current/future K-12 educators who teach/plan on teaching this content. SUMMARY:Institute for Curriculum Services LVW - Developing Religious Literacy
DESCRIPTION:Exposure to the world’s religious traditions is critical for students as they move toward becoming global citizens. Focusing on the NCSS’s C3 Supplement on Teaching about Religion\, this interactive session explores the legal foundations in the United States for teaching about religion\, uses case studies to consider the very real challenges involved in teaching this topic\, and provides both guidelines and compelling digital options for incorporating the study of religion into instruction. Furthermore\, the session leverages current data and academic research to illuminate the societal dangers of religious illiteracy—such as the rise of prejudice and misinformation—while underscoring the pedagogical importance of building robust religious literacy to foster empathy\, critical thinking\, and civic engagement in students. \nThis is an open workshop\, led by one of our ICS educators\, and is designed for current/future K-12 educators who teach/plan on teaching this content. SUMMARY:Institute for Curriculum Services LVW - Jewish Voices in Early America
DESCRIPTION:In the year of the nation’s 250th anniversary\, join ICS to explore a paradox of the early Republic: the gap between the vision of liberty and the reality of religious exclusion.
