SUMMARY:Institute for Curriculum Services LVW - Jewish Voices in Early America
DESCRIPTION:In the year of the nation’s 250th anniversary\, join ICS to explore a paradox of the early Republic: the gap between the vision of liberty and the reality of religious exclusion. While the founders championed representative democracy\, many 1776 state constitutions implemented practices that effectively barred Jewish citizens and other religious minorities from holding public office. \nThis session equips educators with primary source-driven strategies to teach the crucial distinction between religious toleration and true religious liberty. Highlighting primary sources such as Jonas Phillips’ 1787 letter to George Washington\, the session will trace the civic activism of early Jewish Americans that expanded religious liberty. \nThis is an open workshop\, led by one of our ICS educators\, and is designed for current/future K-12 educators who teach/plan on teaching this content. DESCRIPTION:This Chancellor’s Day\, join the Institute for Curriculum Services for a virtual workshop that will give you the resources and tools needed to accurately teach the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict within your classroom. \nThe Arab-Israeli conflict remains a deeply sensitive topic\, often viewed through the lens of ancestral\, religious\, or ethnic identities. SUMMARY:Grand Slam History: Using the Start of Baseball to Teach About Jewish Americans
DESCRIPTION:Step up to the plate and discover the rich lineup of Jewish American identity and history through the lens of one of baseball’s most legendary figures: Sandy Koufax. As the 2026 baseball season kicks off\, this session uses the “Left Arm of God” as a starting point to explore the pivot point in the 1965 World Series where Koufax chose to honor his faith over the game\, forever changing how the public viewed the intersection of heritage\, religion\, and the All-American pastime. \nParticipants will go “beyond the scoreboard” to:\n– Analyze Identity: Examine the complexities of Jewishness as both an ethnicity and a religion\, and how these dual identities are navigated in public spaces.\n– Explore Diversity: Learn about the global tapestry of the Jewish American community\, from Ashkenazi and Sephardi roots to modern-day diverse backgrounds.\n– Examine History through Sport: Trace the historical challenges and triumphs of Jewish Americans\, including allies in the Civil Rights movement and pioneers in science and the arts.\n– Equip Your Classroom: Receive a “roster” of ready-to-use materials\, including primary source documents\, mini-lessons\, and digital resources perfectly timed for Jewish American Heritage Month in May. \nThis is an open workshop\, led by one of our ICS educators\, and is designed for current/future K-12 educators who teach/plan on teaching this content.
