Environmental Cooperation as a Path to Peace in the Middle East

  • When we think about the Middle East and the regional conflicts that are daily played out in our media, we often attribute them to religious extremism, land disputes, or oil. But climate change, land and resource degradation, water scarcity, and crop failure also contribute to instability in the region. In this presentation, experience and apply critical pedagogy around environmental crisis points in the Middle East that are being addressed through peaceful transboundary collaboration and the introduction of new technologies. This section provides an exciting multidisciplinary option on a critically important topic for middle and high school teachers.

Religion in the Classroom

  • Education about and exposure to the world’s traditions is critical for students as they move toward becoming global citizens. In this workshop, which focuses on Judaism, participants will experience a model for teaching about religion in public school classrooms, based on the most recent research. With an emphasis on content and pedagogy, this session covers the following topics: the complexity of Jewish Identity; Jewish history across the centuries with an overview of ancient, medieval, and modern periods; Jewish practices and traditions; and core tenets of Judaism such as monotheism and social justice. Standards-aligned resources support instruction in Ancient Civilizations, World Religions, World History and U.S. History courses.
